India-U.S. Trade Talks Reach Stalemate, Finance Minister Confirms

India's Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, stated that trade negotiations with the U.S. have hit a plateau, raising doubts about a potential agreement. The trade discussions, which aim to balance the U.S. goods trade deficit with India, reported as $58.42 billion in 2025, face significant challenges. Sitharaman's remarks at the Munich Leaders Meeting in New Delhi come as U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer indicated a trade deal is not imminent. India has sought better tariffs from the U.S. to enhance its export competitiveness, while the U.S. desires to reduce its trade imbalance with India. In the first seven months of 2026, the trade deficit stood at $28.4 billion according to U.S. data. Discussions are ongoing despite the difficulties, with both countries previously agreeing on an interim deal that involves India buying more American goods. The continuation of unresolved trade talks impacts both nations' economies, as highlighted by former U.S. trade representative Mark Linscott. Without a finalized deal, the U.S. may impose higher tariffs, which could adversely affect Indian exports. The negotiations are crucial since the U.S. market holds significant importance for India's economy.
