Tencent and Visa Expand China Payments Partnership After Regulatory Approval
Tencent and Visa have expanded their partnership in cross-border payments and AI-powered commerce in China following regulatory approvals. Visa and Citi received approvals this month to expand operations in China, the world's second-largest economy. Tencent and Visa's memorandum of understanding aims to simplify payments for travelers entering and leaving China and expand their cross-border money transfer services. The two companies plan to enable travelers to pay merchants through Tencent's Weixin Pay and Visa networks, subject to regulatory rules. They will also enhance collaboration using Visa Direct, facilitating easier fund transfers into the Weixin Pay ecosystem. Additionally, they intend to develop agentic commerce, where AI agents assist consumers in finding and purchasing products. Tencent's senior executive vice president, Dowson Tong, highlighted the combination of Tencent's AI with Visa's global network to improve cross-border payments and create new commerce opportunities in China and internationally. Visa recently received approval from the People's Bank of China to prepare for a domestic bank card clearing business, moving closer to entering China's domestic payments market after over 40 years. This partnership and approval mark significant steps in opening China's financial sector to foreign firms, impacting cross-border payment processes and commerce in the region.
