Hurricane Isaias to Intensify Before US Gulf Coast Landfall

Hurricane Isaias is moving towards the U.S. Gulf Coast and is forecast to intensify rapidly. The hurricane, which has maximum sustained winds around 80 mph (129 kph), is expected to bring strong winds and life-threatening storm surges upon landfall late Friday or early Saturday. It is centered approximately 420 miles (676 kilometers) south-southwest of the Mississippi River as of early Thursday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Preparations are underway across the affected areas. Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in parts of Florida, and some Gulf oil wells have paused production. Florida and Alabama governors have declared a state of emergency for dozens of counties. Isaias could cause up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain in some areas and spawn tornadoes once it makes landfall. Coastal communities have been asked to complete preparations against storm surge and damaging winds promptly. The arrival of Hurricane Isaias marks the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, which has been unusually quiet due to a strong El Niño. This storm highlights the continued need for readiness in hurricane-prone areas and could disrupt regional energy production and infrastructure.
