Sovereign Wealth Funds Surge 190% Investment in China and Hong Kong in 2026

Sovereign wealth funds increased their investments in mainland China and Hong Kong to $14.2 billion in the first nine months of 2026. This amount surged 190% compared to total investments in 2025, as reported by Global SWF, a Singapore-based consultancy. The rise reverses a 54% decline in 2025 driven by geopolitical tensions and economic concerns. Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds led the rebound, with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund responsible for $6 billion of the inflows. The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority contributed $2.5 billion, while Mubadala and Qatar Investment Authority invested $800 million and $600 million, respectively. Collectively, these four Gulf funds made up nearly 70% of sovereign investments into the region during this period. The renewed interest is motivated by opportunities in Chinese technology, biotechnology, consumer markets, and advanced manufacturing. Experts highlight China's manufacturing strengths and extensive research infrastructure as advantages for AI-related industry applications. For Mubadala, Asia and especially China remain key for portfolio diversification and growth, noting current attractive valuations and potential consumer market expansion. This surge matters for investors as it highlights a significant rebound in sovereign wealth fund confidence, potentially influencing capital flow and market valuations in Chinese and Hong Kong sectors, especially in technology and consumer industries.
