Abilene Christian's Endowment Outperforms with 13.6% Return
Abilene Christian University (ACU) reported a remarkable performance of its endowment, which has outpaced larger Ivy League institutions like Yale University. As of June 2026, the university's 10-year return stood at 13.6%, surpassing the 9.1% of a benchmark with 70% global stocks and 30% bonds. This performance places ACU ahead of Yale, whose endowment returned 9.4% over the decade ending June 2025. ACU's endowment has recently crossed the $1 billion mark, highlighting its successful management strategy. Joe Lee, president and chief investment officer at Abilene Christian Investment Management Company (ACIMCO), attributed this success to small, sound decisions made over the years. These decisions leveraged the advantages of a smaller endowment, such as looking at smaller funds that larger institutions might overlook. ACIMCO manages the portfolio with an equity-oriented philosophy and a focus on diversification. This performance matters as it showcases how smaller institutions can compete with larger endowments by using strategic management and taking advantage of unique opportunities. Despite having fewer resources, ACU has managed to achieve significant growth, reflecting the importance of sound management in endowment performance.
