Deoleo Shares Fall 18% After Dcoop and Acesur Takeover Deal

Shares of Deoleo, the world's largest olive oil company, dropped 17.8% following an announcement that two Spanish rivals, Dcoop and Acesur, plan to acquire the company with each holding a 50% stake. This merger aims to create a new olive oil giant in Spain, further consolidating the country's leadership in the olive oil sector. Before this drop, Deoleo's stock had risen about 55% year-to-date, benefiting from moderated olive oil prices that helped increase U.S. sales. The acquisition battle also involved multinational companies from Italy, France, and Australia, with Dcoop reportedly offering 470 million euros ($545 million) for Deoleo. Spain is a major global olive oil producer and often sets price benchmarks. Prices have been volatile due to factors like climate change and water scarcity. Deoleo's CEO Cristóbal Valdés said market challenges from 2022 to 2024 are easing as prices stabilize due to better rainfall. This deal matters for investors as it changes company ownership and could impact industry supply dynamics and pricing.
