Tesla (TSLA) Q3 Earnings Beat with $28.05B Revenue, Auto Sales Down 3%
Tesla (TSLA) reported third-quarter earnings slightly above expectations, with adjusted earnings per share at 48 cents versus 43 cents estimated. Net income attributable to common shareholders fell 29% year-over-year to $787 million, or 22 cents per share, down from $1.11 billion and 32 cents per share a year earlier. This decline in profitability was attributed to increased spending on Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots and artificial intelligence projects. Capital expenditures more than doubled, reaching $3.73 billion, and free cash flow dropped 62% to $1.53 billion. Tesla also highlighted a 67% increase in active subscriptions of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system to 1.74 million, reflecting a 20 percentage point rise from the second quarter. The company plans to provide some customers access to a forthcoming unsupervised FSD system in the second quarter of next year. The results come shortly after Elon Musk mentioned potential merger discussions between Tesla and SpaceX. These earnings data matter for investors because despite revenue growth, the increased costs and declining automotive sales could pressure profit margins and cash flow in the near term.
