Polar Night Energy Launches World's Largest Sand Battery to Store 100 MWh

The world's largest commercial sand battery has been launched in Pornainen, Finland, covering almost one month of heating demands in the summer and about one week in the winter. The facility stands 13 meters tall and uses 2,000 metric tons of crushed soapstone to store energy in the form of heat, providing 100 megawatt-hours (MWh) of thermal energy. Developed by Polar Night Energy and commissioned by Loviisan Lämpö, the project aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions from the local heating network by nearly 70% and decrease wood chip usage by about 60%. This innovation represents a significant step toward addressing renewable energy's intermittency issue, which is relevant for investors interested in emerging energy technologies.
