U.S. Budget Deficit Nears $2 Trillion for Fiscal 2026
The U.S. concluded the 2026 fiscal year with a budget deficit of approximately $1.992 trillion, representing a 12% increase from the previous year's $1.775 trillion deficit, according to the Treasury Department. This makes it the third-highest deficit in U.S. history after the years 2020 and 2021, which saw significant financial stimulus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. For the fiscal year 2026, Social Security accounted for the largest portion of government spending at nearly $1.7 trillion, and Medicare costs were around $1.1 trillion. The fiscal year also marked the 25th consecutive year of deficit operation for the U.S., with Treasury yields reaching 24-year highs due to rising debt concerns. Notably, individual income taxes contributed over $2.8 trillion to government receipts, up by 7%, while corporate income taxes decreased by about $70 billion due to recent tax cuts. The ongoing budget deficit concerns have implications for global financial markets, as high U.S. Treasury yields can impact borrowing costs worldwide. For ordinary investors, these developments suggest a potentially more volatile bond market environment.
