Counterfeit Goods Rising: 25% Shoppers Aware of Risks in Online Shopping

Research by the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) found that a quarter of shoppers (25%) have knowingly purchased counterfeit goods. The illegal trade in counterfeits is reportedly funding organized crime. Consumer groups warn that the increase in online shopping has made it easier for unsafe and fake products to reach consumers, particularly among those aged 18 to 44. The government is considering new legislation to ensure online shops bear responsibilities similar to traditional retailers to protect consumers.
